Etisalat and ISC install Middle East's first Root Name Server
February 14 - 2006
UAEnic (United Arab Emirates Network Information Centre) today announced the hosting of a secondary server for Sudan Country Code Top Level Domain (.sd) requested by the Sudan Internet Society.
This would ensure redundancy and stability for the Sudan TLD in the event of any interruption or excess web traffic. The move marks a new level of cooperation between UAEnic and countries from the MENA region in order to improve the level of Internet infrastructure and performance in the region.
Having sufficient network capacity to reach the servers is a big concern under high load with the growth of Internet in the region. One way to address this is to shorten the distance between clients and servers by distributing the servers in the network through secondary DNS servers. This way queries and responses have to travel shorter distances and thus use less network resources. Potential congestion near relatively few busy servers is spread out and more servers can be effectively deployed.
According to Abdulla Hashim, Manager, UAEnic, 'We are very happy to partner with the Sudan Internet Society in their endeavour to improve the stability of the Sudan TLD. The infrastructure that UAEnic can provide is among the most advanced in the region and is reflective of the lead that UAE has taken in being a pioneer in the Middle East in terms of initiatives related to the Internet.'
He further added , 'Initiatives like these reflect the growing ties of Arab cooperation and UAEnic's strong involvement and commitment in partnering with countries around the region in order to develop and improve Internet technology standards.'
