Domain Name System (DNS)

The domain name system (DNS) is the way that Internet domain names are located and translated into Internet Protocol addresses. A domain name is a meaningful and easy-to-remember "handle" for an Internet address.

Because maintaining a central list of domain name/IP address correspondences would be impractical, the lists of domain names and IP addresses are distributed throughout the Internet in a hierarchy of authority. There is probably a DNS server within close geographic proximity to your access provider that maps the domain names in your Internet requests or forwards them to other servers in the Internet.

Domain Name

A domain name locates an organization or other entity on the Internet. For example, the domain name www.uae.gov.ae

locates an Internet address for www.uae.gov.ae at Internet point 194.170.168.15 and a particular host server named "www". The "ae" part of the domain name reflects the country code for UAE as in ISO 3166 document and is called the top-level domain name. The "gov" part of the domain name defines the category of the organization or entity (in this example it is government) and it is in the second level domain. The "uae" part of the domain name is the spefied name of the organization and it is under the third level.

Internet Protocol (IP)

IP address is a 32-bit number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent in packets across the Internet. When you request an HTML page or send e-mail, the Internet Protocol part of TCP/IP includes your IP address in the message (actually, in each of the packets if more than one is required) and sends it to the IP address that is obtained by looking up the domain name in the Uniform Resource Locator you requested or in the e-mail address you're sending a note to. At the other end, the recipient can see the IP address of the Web page requestor or the e-mail sender and can respond by sending another message using the IP address it received.
